Laser Resurfacing - Questions

Grand Rapids and West Michigan, MI

Does laser skin resurfacing leave scars?

If performed by a qualified, licensed practitioner, laser skin resurfacing should not result in any scarring.

Is laser skin resurfacing for me?

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure with few risks, but it is important to carefully evaluate any risk factors, and to understand what the procedure can do, and what it can't. Because laser resurfacing only works on the outer layers of skin, it is not effective for deep scars or deep wrinkles.

Laser resurfacing is not usually recommended for patients who have used Accutane in the past two years, or for anyone suffering from skin eruptions such as herpes, psoriasis, or eczema. Patients who are susceptible to excessive scarring or keloids should inform their practitioner and discuss whether the procedure is appropriate.

What are risks involved in laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing does have some minor risks associated with it. In some rare cases, patients will experience some temporary discoloration. This can usually be cleared up within a couple of months using bleaching creams. An even smaller number of patients may experience prolonged redness and sensitivity in the treated area.

Patients with dark olive or brown skin tones are at an enhanced risk for pigmentation problems as a result of skin resurfacing procedures. It is important to review your family history and your skin type with your surgeon before deciding on the procedure.
