Should my child have ear cosmetic surgery?
There are a number of factors involved in a decision such as this. Does your child want the procedure done? Is your child otherwise satisfied with his or her appearance? Are you comfortable with the procedure?
Will there be scarring?
Most cosmetic ear procedures leave a small, faint scar behind the ear.
How long is the recovery process?
Your child should be up and walking around shortly after ear reshaping surgery. The full recovery process, however, comes in stages, and healing will usually be complete within about a month.
What are the risks of ear reshaping?
Most of the risks of ear reshaping are general risks associated with any surgical procedure.
The primary surgical risk is reoccurrence of the protrusion (correctable), although some less common risks include adverse reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding, excessive scarring, and the possibility that the surgery will result in some asymmetry between the two ears.
