We all know that there are certain things we want to save on and certain things we want to splurge on. Hunting for a new cell phone? You might explore money-saving options on websites like Amazon or EBay. Thinking about a breast augmentation? You’re probably not looking for the best deal, but the best surgeon.
When doing research for your operation, you should make sure you are finding surgeons with one very important factor: board certification. We have a few reasons why you want your plastic surgeon to be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery:
The process is tough.
Plastic surgery is life changing. You want your surgeon to have drive and passion for his/her profession. The board certification process is rigorous. After a six-year (sometimes longer) residency that includes yearly exams, surgeons also have to complete an even more difficult exam that has a 15%-20% failure rate. The process doesn’t end there. Hopeful board certified surgeons also have to complete an oral exam that includes a review of the candidates cases randomly selected from their first year in practice
Learning never stops.
Board certification is a continuous process. Medical and surgical procedures are constantly changing to make the experience and results better for the patient. Surgeons must keep up with these changes and that is why even after the certification is achieved the board requires yearly education hours. Every ten years surgeons must take an exam to be re-certified.
The facility must also be board certified.
To ensure the safety of patients, board certified surgeons must practice at a board-certified facility. When you choose a board certified surgeon and a board certified facility, you are promised care that is held to a higher standard. Trained and experienced support staff, qualified anesthesiologists or anesthetists and superior operating rooms are also to be expected at a board certified facility.
Of course, there are many other factors that you seek in a surgeon. You want to feel comfortable with you future procedure and you want your surgeon to share your vision. However, choosing a board certified surgeon should be your first priority, and then you can continue searching for other important qualities.
