Breast Implants - Augmentation
Grand Rapids, West Michigan, MI
Augmentation mammoplasty, commonly known as breast augmentation, is a procedure in which implants are used to enlarge and enhance the breasts, giving the body more aesthetically pleasing proportions.
In addition to simple breast enlargement, breast augmentation is frequently used to correct sagging or loss of breast mass as a result of aging, childbirth, or genetic factors.
Each breast augmentation procedure is customized to best accomplish that patient's individual goals and needs, so there are a number of decisions to be made about the type of procedure, including the placement, type of implants, and the type of incision used for the procedure.
Breast Implant Placement
There are various positions in which breast implants can be placed, each with its own benefits and risks. As a rule, the deeper the implant is placed inside the body, the more natural looking the breasts will be. However, a deeper implant requires a more invasive procedure, with a bit more of recovery, but the long-term results are better in most cases.
Types of Implants
There are two primary types of implants currently available: silicone and saline.
Silicone implants consist of an outer shell made of rubber-like silicone, and a filling of silicone in a gel consistency. A new generation of silicone breast implants has been approved by the FDA for all women 22 and older.
Saline implants also consist of an outer shell of silicone, but they are filled instead with a sterile saline solution similar to that present in the human body.
Both silicone and saline implants are available in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes. Your surgeon will help you decide which will be best for you. You will also have an opportunity to "try on" silicone and saline breast implants in various sizes and shapes during your private breast implant sizing session with our patient care coordinator.
Types of Incision
There are also several types of incisions available for breast enhancement procedures. The three most common incisions are in the inframammary fold, transaxillary (armpit), and periareolar (made along the lower half of the areola). Each approach has its' advantages and disadvantages. Your surgeon will discuss these options with you. Together you will decide what is your best approach.
